GETTING READY FOR 5760

PREPARATION
Our Sages On Repentance

A person’s actions and deeds in his daily conduct are the "garments" of his soul. When a person performs good deeds he clothes his soul with good and beautiful garments; when he does bad deeds he covers his soul with dirty and soiled garments.

HOLIDAY ACTION
Tashlich

In his explanation of our customs and tradition, the Maharil traces back the custom of tashlich on Rosh Hashanah to very ancient times. It is performed shortly before sunset on the afternoon of the first day of Rosh Hashanah (unless it falls on Shabbat, then on the second), by going to the banks of a river, lake, or any stretch of water, where certain prayers are recited followed by the symbolic shaking of the corners of our garments.

CHASSIDIC TALE
Selichot In Berditschev

As they approached the Rabbi's home, they saw him at the door, on his way out. They were amazed to see that he was holding a basket, from which the slim neck of a vodka bottle was sticking out invitingly. The tantalizing smell of freshly baked kichlech and fresh herring could not be ignored.

"…What on earth is the Rabbi going to do with the refreshments at this hour?" they wondered, as they followed him in silence at a respectful distance.

CHILDREN
The Fireman

Once it happened that a lad from a small village came to town for the first time. He stopped at an inn, on the outskirts of the town. Suddenly he heard the sound of a bugle. He asked the innkeeper what it meant. "Whenever we have a fire," the innkeeper explained to the lad, "we sound the bugle, and the fire is quickly put it out.

"How wonderful!" thought the village lad. "What a surprise and sensation I will bring to my village!"

THE NEW YEAR IS COMING
The Confession

Man's life-force is equally present throughout the body, in the toes no less than in the head. Some higher soul-powers (such as intellect, vision, hearing etc.) are indeed in the head, but these are merely specific soul-powers. The life-force itself, that which makes us living beings, is equal throughout the body, in the heels of the legs no less than in the brain of the head. So, too, it is with the Torah.
